Photo Story

This carousel model lays out what is being worked for by all of the volunteers.

The three main carvers work at different stages on the animals.

Here a volunteer carver works to carve the head of what will eventually be the animal Berry. You can see his dedication by how beat up his hands are

This retired old teacher wears an apron with the names of his students decorating it. He carefully carves pieces for the new cow piece. He says it takes upwards of 5 years just to get to that stage of the cow and painting may take another 5-10 years.

Here is the final product of all the hardworking volunteers at the Albany Carousal. Years of work is put into each animal but the final product makes it worth it.

Blog Post Week 10

This term I would say the best photo I have taken is the one of the OSU student high fiving the little girl at the run. While the photo was not perfect I loved the expressions and feeling that the photo gave. This photo reflects what I have learned about taking action shots, making the faces visible and capturing a moment. Between the beginning of the term and now I now know to always shoot someone from the front, get their name, and capture interesting angles.
For class I want to be able to take pictures that are good enough to add to the school paper. Along with that I want to get more comfortable talking to strangers and people I do not necessarily know. Finally I want to contribute to the paper through good stories.

Looking back I think I achieved these things for the most part. I had two or three good photos in the commuter  which were of Sam Grove by the water fountain, and Kane Weekly’s portrait. My ability to talk to strangers has also grown. When having to go to the carousel and interview people it was much easier because I had talked to so many new people  through the term.

Hometown

Members of the community gather on a tour to learn more about the Albany carousal. The volunteer carver explains the process of creating the animals.

The Addams Family is showing at the Albany Community Theatre on many days in the month of May

This Murel is painted on the side of a building down on first street. The painting represents some type of angel with the man's wide stretched arms.

Addario Reflection

I like chapter 8 of the book because it shows how Addarios's confidence ha been built up since the beginning of the book. She used to be unsure at times and scared of the new places and the conflicts going on there. In chapter 8 however she starts of by saying "I feel more fortune to be an independent, educated women." She now appreciate and is comfortable with her situation. The chapter reflects his because it is much slower paces then most chapter. Rather than the military conflict she is used to she instead is conflicted about a man. Chapter 8 does not have a photo but in chapter 7 I like the very last photo of the women walking in the wind.  I learned in this chapter that it is hard to live conventional life as a photojournalist.
My second favorite chapter is chapter 10. I love how right after she talks about her love for Paul and the thought of a Family she can't turn away her work and passion. My favorite quote is the last sentence of chapter 10 which is "I couldn't take it anymore and I got on a plane. I was headed to Libya." It shows Addario is not able to live that normal life and she feels she must get away. My favorite photo is the boy with the bandaids on his face. The photo just has such great expression. In this chapter I again was reinforced with the fact that photojournalists can't live norma lives.

Blog Forum Week 7

Hometown:
For the neighborhood/hometown assignment I am going to photograph the city of Albany. I am choosing Albany because it is where i have lived my entire life and I think it would be interesting to look st it from a different perspective and try to capture some interesting photos. For the photo I take I could take a photo of a pedestrian as my subject and then I could take a photo of the carousel for my landmark picture. For the activity I could possibly take photos of people riding the carousel. The photo that will pose the biggest challenge will be the subject one because I will need to actually interact with people.

2 Photo Story:
For my photo story I could do Paris Barton who is a photographer. I will document her time doing different shoots. I will start doing this next week and do it a few days throughout a couple weeks. I will do it wherever she is doing her photo shoots at. That may be in downtown corvallis or in a park or in a field or even at her house. I plan to document her throughout the shooting process so that means makeup, shooting pictures and perhaps even editing. I will do this by having my camera read yat all times and asking her what she’s doing prior to the shoot so I have a general idea.

CARDV Sports Shots

During the CARDV Walk/Run at Oregon State University many volunteers line the path for the walkers. They all encouraged the runners and walkers and always made sure to offer a hi-five to the children who walk by.

More Oregon State student stand and encourage both the walkers and the runners during the CARDV Walk/Run 5k.

100's of people gather for the CARDV Run/Walk in Corvallis on May 11th of 2019. Those Young and Old stand together to support CARDV's mission of taking action against domestic abuse.

Paris Barton Portrait Free Shoot

Paris Barton
Paris is someone whose true passion is art and photography. The best place to shoot her would be her room where she takes most of her photos for her shoots. I think the prop that would work the best is simply her camera. I was able to take her picture in the middle of a shoot she was doing so the lighting worked well.

Addario Week 5

So far in Lynsey Addario’s book “It’s What I Do” I think that her adventures are very telling of how much she loves photography. Considering I want to be a filmmaker that fact that she does whatever it takes to go capture that perfect photo is very moving to me and has made a big impact on me. These specific things are when she goes to new york and thn Iran not weeks after the Twin Towers fell. The lessons that can be applied to photojournalism are that the shots we strive to get do not require near as much as others. For example, if we think it's tough going up to a stranger and asking for the picture it is nothing compared to having to do it in the midst of a war. The life of a full time photojournalist definitely comes at a price. Overall I think Addarios biggest sacrafafice is her not getting to spend as much time with her family. My favorite quote from chapter 6 s when she says “I signed my first will in a flak jacket, holding my helmet in my left hand. This quote is only a page after she cried on the phone with her parents begging her to come home. The whole thing is very impactful. My favorite photo is the one where the Taliban soldiers are gathered and the man in front has his prosthetic leg sitting next to him.
Marc
At the Linn benton safety fair I approached Marc who I thought looked very intriguing. He explained he was running the bike repair station for the fair which allows people to bring in their bikes and have him take a look. Marc is the owner of PNW Mobile Bicycle Repair.

The helmets reflection shows the many people at the Linn Benton Safety fair. These helmets are lined in memory of this who have lost their lives in motorcycle accidents. A very powerful messier for a very important public event.

On Monday May 1st of 2019 students, staff, and others gather in the courtyard-for the Linn Benton Health and safety fair. They tour the various booths where they can learn about various aspects of public safety and be taught by professionals

Photographer of the Week

Photographer of the Week
Arthur Elgort was born June 8th of 1940 in Brooklyn New York. In college he tried his hand as a painter although he quickly found thus art form to be very isolated and lonely. He then moved to photography which he quickly found he had a knack for. After he began as a photographer he quickly found his way to Vogue and in 1971 his work debited in Vogue British Magazine.
He quickly found his unique style and soon became widely renowned. AS opposed to the uptight, staged look that the models had in most photography, Arthur adopted what is now known as a “snapshot style.” Elgort encouraged the models to be natural and relaxed during the photos which made for a picture that seems grounded and real. As opposed to a studio setting he would capture his photos in a “real world” setting such as city streets or homes. His unique style granted him high acclaim in the world of fashion and photography alike. Elgort was able to stray away from the typical style of fashion photography and make a name by being different.
My favorite image of his is the one he took of the woman looking out of the car sunroof. I love this image because while it is staged it still somehow has a natural feel to it. The woman looking out of the sunroof has sparkly diamonds on her eyelids which contrasts the old abandoned house behind her. By mixing a natural street photography with photography that is staged it makes for a unique look and feel.
Due to his unique style, Elgort has gained a very high notoriety in the world of photography. He is earned the ability to photograph models from various countries and in many locations that not everyone would be able to do. Elgort is a prime example of how being different and sparking change can have a large impact in the world.

LBCC Art Show

During the Art show at LBCC that took place on Thursday the 18th students Blake Guerrero and Sam Grove analyze Gustav Klimt’s painting “Symbolism Art Nouveau Vienna Secession.” They are just a couple of the many others that came to look at the gallery.

Two students look at some work by Salvador Dali at the Art Gallery on Friday April 18th. The painting that is being analyzed is titled is set next to his more famous painting in order to compare them.

Students of LBCC admire the lesser known original works of various famous artists. This art gallery highlights original, lesser known pieces of art made by some of the most highly renowned artists in history.
Topic One
Paris Barton is who I plan on shooting. Paris is someone whose true passion is art and photography. The best place to shoot her would be her room where she takes most of her photos for her shoots. I think the prop that would work the best is simply her camera. I plan on texting her about all this because I know her well.

Jacob Nester is the person who I plan on Shooting. Jacob wants to be a screenwriter so I think I want to shoot him wherever he likes to write. The prop I think I would have is his laptopI will text him since I know him.

Topic 2:
  1. The best photo I have taken so far is one of Blake Guerrero in the art gallery

  1. The worst photo I posted on my blog so far is the other one I took of Blake Guerrero because of the poor lighting
  2. The skill I need to have is to understand what mistakes I have made and what I need to do to correct it

Sam Grove
In my interview with Sam I started by asking what his major was and the conversation just took off. He explained that he is majoring in child development seeing as he plans to become a preschool teacher. I was surprised when he said he was able to start in a year or so. I further asked why he wanted to work in this field with this age group of kids. Sam said that he likes kids of that age because they are so creative and they do not care what others think. They just do what they want," he explains. I thought this was a very interesting point I had not thought about. He then said he would like to be a nanny who travels to different places around the world and take care of other children which is also very interesting.

Blake Guerrero
I found Blake sitting in a Hot Shot Cafe so I thought I would ask him a few questions. I asked him his major and he explained that he his currently doing general education but then, very enthusiastically he said he will be switching to the culinary program in the fall. I  asking him where he sees himself in ten years. Blake says “In ten years I would like to be working at a restaurant, maybe traveling around and working with other chefs as well.” I then asked Blake what the reason was for his strong love for food and he quickly explained that he loved the expression of culture as well as the personal story that can be told through food and cooking.

Humans of LBCC

Kane Weekly

“In ten years I want to be running my own business,” 19 year old freshman Kane Weekly said in my interview with him. He went on to explain that he currently is majoring in engineering but is thinking about switching to business to further his passion. When I asked why he thought he would be good at running a business he replied “I have been working in the property care business for a long time and I really enjoy it. I think I am a pretty hard worker so if I keep working hard I could definitely run my own business.” When I asked Kane what the hardest part of college was he explained that “Adjusting to the increased workload of the classes has been difficult and trying to balance everything else in my life also is tough.”

Julia Frazier

Sitting in a Criminal Justice 101 I asked Linn Benton freshman Julia Frazier what her major was and she told me she was a psychology major. I further asked what she plans to do with that degree. Julia explained that she wants to be a counselor and work with “teens and young adults.”

Week 1 Assignment

Topic 1:
I am a 19 year old freshman with a major in general studies although I ultimately want to be a filmmaker. I have been practicing photography and filmmaking for about three years so I have a decent understanding of how cameras and photography work. I took this class to learn more about photography but also get an insight on the world go journalism.

Topic 2:
For class I want to be able to take pictures that are good enough to add to the school paper. Along with that I want to get more comfortable talking to strangers and people I do not necessarily know. Finally I want to contribute t the paper through good stories.

Topic 3:
Some good subjects could be of the baseball team since it is now spring. Another good subject could be the culinary students cooking meals since it is something that people often don't get to see. Another great group of subjects could be students that are all very diverse, whether it be through ethnicity and background.
